David Hockney Collage

For this assignment we had to make a collage of pictures from one scene. We stood in one place and took mini pictures of our full picture and put them together. Thsi is a photo of my sister.

Assignment #8

For this assignment we had to create two logos for a random company. I got 3 Tree Landscaping and this is the logo I created.

Conform and Wear Nice Shoes: The Invasion of (public) privacy

This article opened my eyes to many things I did not know. For example, there are video cameras everywhere we go at any time of day. One huge sign in a Kenneth Cole add said, ” You are on a video camera over 20 times a day. Are you dressed for it?” This is saying to people that they need to be “dressed to impress” all the time because possibly anyone from the government looking for a suspicious suspect or a rapist looking from someone vulnerable could be watching you. Most people, to be more invisible or not stand out, conform to their society which is bad because they stop expressing themselves and they feel closed in all because  of the lack of privacy they receive even in public. There is an estimated 15,000 surveillance cameras in New York City alone and that’s probably not an exact number because after 9/11 all security increased dramatically. I think this is good to an extent and there is a line that has been crossed. I understand we need security, but for so many people to have access to it and for it to be literally everywhere we go is a little much. The worst part is, most of the public don’t even know what’s going on.

Assignment #7 (Part 2 Color)

For this assignment we had to take our previous one, in black and white, and convert it to color. We were only allowed to use two colors and I chose blue and orange because blue conveys a sense of security and serenity and orange makes people want to buy a product.

History of the Computer 2

The exact measurements of the first computer were 8.5 feet (2.6 m) by 3 feet (0.9 m) by 80 feet (26 m) and taking up 680 square feet (63 m2). ARPnet was the first internet. the first world wide web was called WorldWideWeb and was created in the 1990’s. Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak developed the Apple I computer in a garage behind their parent’s home and Jobs is still with Apple today. Apple Easter Eggs are little icons or applications that can make your computer faster, more useful, or more fun. In the next ten years, I think computers will become a part of our everyday lives, more than they are now. I think we will need computers for everything from getting dressed and eating breakfast in the morning to dinner at night. They already have movies out about houses run by computers and I’m sure our society is not to far from that.

Assignment #7

For this assignment, we had to create a logo for a specific company. We had to choose from a key or a hammer and we could not outline it we had to actually create it, but it had to be simple and recognizable.

Pirates of Silicon Valley

I rate this movie 4 stars because it really showed the actual events that occurred to create these huge companies. It showed how Jobs and Gates were before they came up with the idea to start these new companies and how it all came about. Jobs started constructing computers with his partner, Wozniak, in a small garage, while Gates was building computer software in a motel warehouse. Jobs became more successful than Gates in the beginning when he created the Apple company and making new computers almost every year. Although Steve Jobs has a brilliant mind, he is not very good with his employees and had them working crazy hours and when he got mad, he would yell at his employees, but his products were better and his company had culture. Gates was a lot more laid back with his employees, but they had no culture it was a typical suit and tie business. Gates wanted Jobs’ computers, so he tricked Jobs into trusting  him with a new computer prototype. Of course, Gates stole the idea from the Apple prototype and ended up using it for his computer designs.

It’s very ironic that Steve Jobs was more successful in the beginning with his own ideas, but Bill Gates became teh wealthiest man in the world after stealing Steve Jobs’ ideas. I thought this movie was very interesting and now I know a lot more about the background of computers and technology overall. I would have liked to see Steve Jobs and Bill Gates get along better and gain that trust so they could merge their companies. That would have been pretty amazing, but they are still very brilliant, inspiring, and successful men.

David Hockney

These are examples of one of David Hockney’s collage work.

He received a scholarship to Bradford Grammar School, which was one of the best schools in t he country, in 1948. He realized he only enjoyed the art classes and asked to be transferred to the Regional College of Art where he drew comics for the newspaper in 1950. In 1957, Hockney graduated with honors and went to the Royal College where he immediately felt at home. He sold many of his paintings in 1961 to go to New York for a summer. He went back to London and ended his college career on a great note. He returned to America in 1965 and taught at a school in Colorado. He lived in an apartment without windows, but he painted the Rocky Mountains from memory. In the eighties he moved on to cameras and he started assembling collages and from then on his work has been admired greatly.

IBM “Watson” vs. Humans in Jeopardy

On February 14-16, for charity, a new IBM computing system competed on Jeopardy against two of the best contestants on the show, Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter. Jeopardy is a game that requires thinking out of the box and connecting things that computers traditionally would not be able to figure out. This is why creating this machine that could actually compete with humans is remarkable, and made  history on the show. IBM Watson beat the other  two contestants on the show and now they can donate a one million dollar grand prize to many different charities. en Jennings came in second place and said, “A few years ago, I didn’t think it was possible for a computer to play at this level. IBM knocked my socks off with how fast they’ve caught up.” He won $300,000 and will be donating half to Seattle-based non-profit Village Reach. Rutter came in third place winning $200,000 and will be donating half to the Community Foundation.

In this competition, yes the machine won, but the humans had many advantages. For example, like I said before, humans can connect things like riddles, irony, and analyze deeper meanings of situations a lot better and faster than computers because computers just do what they were programmed to do. The computer had some advantages, too. Computers are a lot faster than humans and have access to a lot more information than the human brain.

I love this idea and I love the fact that technology is evolving so much. Now that this has happened, we know that soon enough the public will have access to so much information quickly. This is good for environmental purposes and historic purposes. Our economy will also pick up to where it used to be all because of this great new invention and all the new ones to come.
